Editors' rant: Welcome to VCE Summer School 08

Editors' web edition note: Hello hello... and welcome to the Web edition of The Zine. Now essentially the web and print copies will contain the same stories with a few exceptions - the entertainment corner including all the puzzles and horoscopes will not be included in the web ed. The teeny tiny 'Did you know?' of the day will not appear in the web ed either. Weather will not be printed... but hey, we're on the internet. You can get much more up to date weather info by clicking on the weather feed which is on the side menu on the right! We steal our weather forecast from there anyway! Do not fear about these sections not being on the web ed though - we will include an electronic copy of print version (PDF format) every day though which you can grab through the Permalinks side link.

The more exciting part of the web ed is that it will hopefully contain more multimedia content - in the form of all the lovely colour photos we plan to be taking throughout the duration of Summer School, to little online web polls etc. It's also going to be more interactive... you guys can post comments to the stories that appear here on the net.

Remember, if you have any suggestions, feedback, ideas or if you'd like to submit a story, letter, photos, a piece of prose, declaration of love or anything else that springs to mind... get in contact with us via our email... SummerSchoolZine at gmail dot com. Oh course, the at = @ and dot = . though!

Yeah... well, that's all. Hope you enjoy this chocka-blocked issue of The Zine. Below is our Editors' Rant from today's print issue which is fairly redundant if you've made it to our web edition.

The printed rant:

G’day everybody and welcome to the first issue of the one and only official source of information for VCE Summer School 2008 (VCE SS) - The Zine.

We are pumped about bringing you all the latest goss from VCE SS and hope that although you may be feeling nervous or anxious, that you too are excited about the upcoming fortnight.

One big move lined up for this year is to take The Zine into an online space… thus you can find us online at SummerSchoolZine dot blogspot dot com. The full normal looking address is at the bottom of the page… You can also email us with feedback and input at: SummerSchoolZine at gmail dot com.

Apart from delivering you The Zine in cyberspace, we’re also hoping to utilize the site to post some extras including colour photos from events (since we only have B&W privileges … sob sob). So be sure to look out for us roving around at many of the group activities planned, camera in hand ready to snap you guys in action.

Hoping to catch ya soon,

Your eds - Sheryl & Jen

Introducing your Summer School Directors... Part I

We took time out with the four people who have worked tirelessly to bring Summer School together for the rest of us to enjoy! Actually, that’s a lie… no no, they did work their butts off organizing Summer School but we didn’t take time out with them. It was all done via email, sweet - just cut and paste. Yes, your Zine editors are sadly very lazy. Without further adieu, meet Sakshi, Tim, Amanda and Kate - your brilliant Summer School 08 directors.

Uni course and year?

Tim: Arts/Law 4th

Sakshi: Commerce 3rd

Kate: Arts/ Commerce 4th

Amanda: Arts/Commerce 4th

Why did you get involved in summer school?

Tim: Since Amanda thought it was good idea... I joined the TEAM!

Sakshi: I got cornered into it by Amanda... in a lift...there was no way out...

Kate: I thought it would be an interesting experience, it is an opportunity to utilise the skills I have learnt at university as well as helping people...

Amanda: I wanted an office at uni... so I found a job that got me an office at uni... PS – I like helping people...

What distinguishes you from the other directors?

Tim: Aside from the obvious.. I am a very distinguished person!

Sakshi: I am the super short one!

Kate: The ability to wear heels anytime all the time...I dare you to try and challenge me!

Amanda: I can be spectacularly allergic to more things than anybody else! Like shoes... bandaids.. Makeup... Rose bushes... and the list goes on and on...

If you had to be bribed with food, what food would it be?

Tim: Chocolate and raspberry tart

Sakshi: Double choc fudge cake!!! Muhahahahahahaha

Kate: BBQ shapes...

Amanda: Dark chocolate maltersers

Mmm... on that note we're out of room but stay tuned for Part II in tomorrow's issue of The Zine.

The Welfare Corner

When you have spares, please come to the 2nd floor of the union building to entertain the 2 welfare coordinators – we don’t bite, and we’d love to have your company. In return, you get to enjoy the air-con, games, talking with us and band-aids!

We will run some riddles of the day, and you will need to visit us for answers! We are also running a tongue-twister challenge from Tuesday, so start practising with the Tongue Twister of the Day during your group meetings! Find someone in your group to represent you in the Tongue Twister challenge at the end of the summer school. There are prizes to be won!

Leaving you with today’s riddle…
Judy & Stan, your welfare reps.

Riddle of the Day: What kind of animal can tell time?

StudMuffin '08...

Don't cha wish your girl(boy)friend was hot like [insert name]?

StudMuffin is back in ‘08, carrying on a long held tradition* of Summer School. So, what is it? Hopefully the poor rip off of The Pussycat Dolls helps, but essentially it is your chance to vote for the hottest guy/girl/animal/thing/whatever of summer school!

We’re going to try running it slightly differently from previous years: this week (up until Friday 11th January 11:59pm) you can submit nominations via email with the subject heading StudMuffin. Our email addy is SummerSchoolZine at gmail dot com.** In the body just put who/what you’re nominating and they’ll be in with a chance for this coveted crown when voting begins in week 2.

Please note, the following terms and conditions apply:
  • One nomination per person … there really is no point nominating the same person multiple times during week 1: they only need one nomination go into the voting pool. If you really really need to vote for the other equally as hot individual - do it with a different Sender name from your email and we’ll never know!
  • Nominations will close on Friday 11th January 11:59pm. Nominees will be collated and listed and voting will commence shortly after this (er… maybe not shortly, but by Monday the 14th Jan). Voting will remain open until Thursday 17th January, 12pm.
  • There is no limit to the number of times you can vote for your StudMuffin of 2008. In fact, this competition will teach you that you do not have to be the hottest or sexiest to win this comp… you just need to have a dedicated fan club who will be happy to vote a copious amount of times and completely bias the voting.
We will keep you posted with updates (including who has been nominated thus far) in the coming issues… so keep watching this space and get those nominations in!

* As far as your editors know, it ran in 07! That’s enough to count as tradition.
** Extra web edition editors' note: Yep, you may think that it's a little weird we are writing our email in this format rather than just blatantly writing it using the @ and . This is a tip for decreasing the chance that the email addy will be picked up by randoms for spam purposes.
