Editors' rant: The Goss from Hollywood

Howdy Summer School students! With all that red tape finally out of the way (phew!), your zany Zine editors finally have a ranting space to call their own. And we’ve decided, being the Hollywood groupies that we are (*rolls eyes*), that nothing kicks the day off better than some good ol’ fashioned gossip.

Oops, Britney Spears has done it again. Has she hit rock bottom of her seemingly bottomless pit of faux pas or has she simply gone utterly deranged? Britney was admitted to Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre a few days ago to undergo a 72-hour psychological evaluation after refusing to hand over her children to ex-husband and rapper extraordinaire (*eyes still rolling*) K-Fed at the appointed time. Britney checked out of the hospital after a mere 24-hours and has since been spotted reasonably sane, enjoying breakfast with paparazzo friend Adnan Ghalib.

On slightly more upbeat news, Nicole Kidman is pregnant! Kidman finally put an end to weeks of speculation and confirmed that she is expecting her first child with her husband country singer Keith Urban. Kidman withdrew from her upcoming film, The Reader, a post WWII film, as she was concerned about the welfare of her unborn child. Kidman had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of her marriage to Tom Cruise and suffered a miscarriage at the time the couple split.

That’s all from Tinseltown today y’all. Hope you guys enjoyed our spiel of Hollywood entertainment. If you can’t get enough, be sure to attend the movie extravaganza at Union Theatre for a night of unprecedented Hollywood glamour!

What's going on today?

8.45am: Group meeting

9.00am: Classes…

11.00am: Maths presentation in the JH Michell Theatre. Okay… day 3 now so we’ll stop reminding you of where that is.

12.00pm: Classes

1.00pm: Lunch - woohoo!

2.00pm: More classes…

4.00pm: Movie/games night is on! We thought we’d keep it mysterious so movie and venue TBA via word of mouth today!

Handy-doodle reminder list

StudMuffin '08...

Don’t cha wish your girl(boy)friend was hot like [insert_name]?

Is it a slow news day or is StudMuffin heating up so much that we felt the need to make it front page material?

No, that question wasn’t rhetorical and admittedly it’s a bit of both… but let’s concentrate on the latter. That being… dum da da da… we have some nominees up for this year’s StudMuffin. (And on a side note, your editors are mighty pleased that the subject filter they set up in their Gmail account is working like a treat!) So should we kill the suspense and reveal who’s so far in the running to be your StudMuffin of VCE SS ‘08? Well… okay.

The nominees (thus far) are:
  • Giuseppe Rubino
  • Alan Young
  • Linda Lam
  • Laura Williams
To those who have made nominations, yes - you can be assured that your nomination will remain anonymous if you wish (under The Zine’s Privacy Act). For everyone else… remember - nominations close on Friday, Jan 11 at 11:59pm. Summerschoolzine at gmail dot com is where nominations should go with the subject heading StudMuffin.

We leave you today with a request to publish a photo of one of our nominees, Alan. Will he be your StudMuffin ‘08? Only time will tell.

The Welfare Corner

Riddle of the Day:
What is black and white and red all over?
Tuesday’s answer: Junk food
Tongue Twister:

To sit in a solemn silence on a dull dark dock
In a pestilential prison with a lifelong lock
Awaiting the sensation of a short sharp lock
From a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block

The wrap up from Day 2

“1, 2, 3… 5, 6, 7...”. The universal counts that echoed through Union House Level 2 were captivating, even if we were wondering where the 4 and the 8 went. (We soon found out that these were silent counts representing a pause!) Anybody who was at Dance Night would associate such a count with part of the salsa routine that was taught to dance lovers and curious souls alike.

For those who couldn’t make it… you missed out on a fantastic evening. The turn out was phenomenal and the dancing even more so. The evening began with a bit of salsa… starting off with the basics and then adding some frills on top (such as a lovely twirl from the ‘girls’ side). We were then treated to a fabulous swing demo before putting our coordination skills and flair to the test with a more complex, but absolutely amazing swing routine.

Check out the weblog for The Zine to find more photos from Dance Night as well as a few videos (we will be endeavouring to get them up some time today). You can also check out the photos from the BBQ from Day 1.

If anybody has additional photos they would like to submit for the online photo album for VCE SS 08 … please feel free to send them to The Zine. That’s SummerSchoolZine at gmail dot com.

Message out and all the best for a wicked Day 3.

Web ed: Yes, there were probably other things that happened on Day 2... they just pale in significance when compared to Dance Night.

Check out all the photos from Day 2 here.

Web edition exclusive: Dance night videos

Hey hey everybody!

We've just loaded up a few videos from yesterday's Dance Night and are pretty excited about it so thought we'd share them with you all. For those who were there, you can view the vids to reminisce and recap your salsa and swing steps! We apologise for the amateur filming quality, but hope you enjoy recapturing the fun from Dance Night.

PS We've embedded the vids in The Zine blog so that they're small and neat. To view a larger size vid... head over to the Summer School 2008 Photo Album (in the Permalinks) under the Day 2 subfolder.

Mass salsa dancing!
