Editors’ Rant: No rant… just a quick word today

Wow - another massive issue of The Zine today… so much so that we editors don’t really have any room to have a good ol’ rant. So instead, just a few reminders: vote for StudMuffin, visit our website and come to dance today!

Sheryl & Jen

What’s going on today?

8.45am: Group meeting

9.00am: Classes… yes, you can’t start at 2pm every day!

1.00pm: Lunch - woohoo!

2.00pm: More classes…

4.00pm: Kick off your day shoes and put on your dancing shoes—it’s dance night with multiple options available! What options you ask? Good question… rock up and you shall find out. To get you hyped, we at The Zine have heard murmurs of latin and swing - ooh! @ Level 2 Union House.

The Welfare Corner... Introducing your Welfare Officers!

Today we give our Welfare Officers Stan and Judy a chance to say ‘Hi’ to you all.

“Hey Guys! I'm Judy and I am one of your welfare officers. I'll be tutoring Psychology 3 and 4 this year, so if anyone has any questions, just ask!... I'll do my best to answer! I've just finished my fourth year in Psychology so I should know a little about what you're talking about.

My interests? Well as you can probably tell, psychology... I majored in it! I also enjoy getting to know people, watching movies, having little chats here and there. If you want to find me to talk about anything and everything or just to listen to you then you can easily find me. I'd like to get to know as many of you as possible so feel free to pop your head in and say hi! Don't be afraid come by the 2nd floor of Union House!”

“Hi! This is Stan, your ‘other’ welfare coordinator. I’m a second year Arts/Commerce student studying Linguistics, Japanese and Economics. I am also the Economics subject coordinator at the summer school, but outside uni, I teach music (mainly violin) for living. I’m a (residential) college student at University of Melbourne, and in my spare time… I don’t think I really have spare time!

I am very open and talkative, so if you want to just have a chat (could be about anything), I’ll be around the 2nd floor of union building. My job is literally to be an open resource for all of you, so please keep me companied (and entertained) and hope you have an awesome time!” So that’s Level 2 Union House people! Also check out today’s riddle AND tongue-twister which are inconveniently located on the next page (due to your Zine editors not rationing enough space for this story!) Web ed note: Haha, we can fix that now!

Riddle of the Day: What do garbage men eat?

Tongue Twister of the Day:
She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells.

Introducing your Summer School Directors... Part II

Trooping on from the introduction in Issue 1, we continue to unravel the inner beings of our Summer School 08 directors.

If you could choose a superpower to have, what would it be and why?
Tim: I already have superpowers, I don’t need anymore
Sakshi: Control the weather.. like Storm from X-Men.. yes with the cool hair and nice costume too.. Why? Well I would look HOT!
Kate: Stop TIME!!! So that I can catch up and sleep and stuff...
Amanda: Be in two places at ONCE! I can do more stuff!

If you could have free, unlimited service for five years from an extremely good cook, chauffeur, housekeeper, masseuse or personal secretary, which would you choose, and why?
Tim: extremely good cook.. no questions asked..
Sakshi: masseuse.. preferably hot and Italian.. but a really good masseuse would be good..
Kate: chauffeur...so she can pick Amanda and her cook up so they can at good food together and drink!
Amanda: extremely good cook.. so she can feed Kate in exchange for dropping and picking her up anytime!!!

What’s your “secret shame” movie – the movie you are afraid to tell people you liked?
Tim: Guys and Dolls
Sakshi: Bride and Prejudice... remember that awful Bollywood come Hollywood....come Jane Austen singing dancing bonanza... yeah... I liked that...
Kate: Crossroads, any kids movie ever made, anything you can sing along too...any boy meets girl, boy loses girl etc... I love it all...
Amanda: Two weeks’ notice…

Ed’s closing note: oh yeah… Crossroads, that is shameful!

The wrap up from Day 1

Day 1 of VCE SS had a bit of everything… students began the day in the J H Michell Theatre but soon enough Melbourne Uni was covered by a sea of turquoise (would you agree that’s the colour of the student t-shirts?) and specs of dark blue (tutor t-shirts) as the group tours around campus were conducted.

Of course while this was happening, the George Paton Gallery (your HQ for VCE SS - when in doubt, go there!) was fairly chaotic with high demand on Day 1 (which is perfectly understandable). Luckily most students (and tutors for that matter) were able to get their enquiries sorted. Thank you to all who helped out at GPG!

The BBQ came next… beautiful weather, delicious sausages and veggie burgers and a great chance to get to know each other. Thank you to all the wonderful chefs who cooked our meals!

After lunch, students leapt into it - with a test on ‘Can you get around to your venue?’ The vast majority of people were successful - kudos to you! I was still wondering when Melb Uni decided to rename the Physics Podium to the David Caro Podium. Hmm.

So with a few classes under the belt now, hopefully everyone is revved for Day 2… today! Bring it on.

Check out all the photos from Day 1 here.
